The Role of Cricket in Promoting Gender Equality

The Role of Cricket in Promoting Gender Equality The Role of Cricket in Promoting Gender Equality

Cricket is a sport that has historically promoted the involvement of women. Played since 1745, cricket is one of the oldest recognised women’s sports that we enjoy on an international level today.

And though we still have a long way to go in closing the gender gap in sports participation, cricket is showing us the way. With developments in school cricket, club cricket and professional leagues too, women’s cricket is quickly on the rise in Australia.

Here’s how cricket promotes women’s involvement, helping to bring gender equality in sports:

School cricket for girls

Most professional cricketers find their love for the sport in primary school. Without sufficient access to cricket in primary schools, there would be no professional cricketers. That’s why it’s so important for school cricket leagues to make the sport accessible for young girls.

In South Australia, school cricket is available state-wide for girls to represent their schools in the sport. Junior state cricket teams also apply for both boys and girls.

Women’s club cricket teams

In April 2024, Australian Cricket launched its Women and Girls Action Plan, which aims to keep cricket at the forefront of the women’s sports revolution. The goals are to drive significant increases in participation, audiences, commercial revenue and representation over the next ten years. This is largely going to be done through enhanced infrastructure for women’s club cricket, with around $500 million being spent to achieve this.

If you’re looking to get into cricket, or start playing it competitively, find your local cricket club and sign up for their women’s team – we can guarantee you that you’ll be welcomed with open arms!

Professional developments

On top of this, we’ve seen a huge development in professional women’s cricket too. The WBBL is one of Australia’s best women’s sports leagues, not only giving women cricketers a platform to show their craft, but also an important stage for inspiring young girls to pick up the ball, pick up the bat and get into the great sport of cricket!
