The Psychology of Losing The Psychology of Losing

In September 2024, the San Marino national football team (the lowest ranked team in the world) got their very first win, defeating Liechtenstein 1-0. Since their inception in 1986, they waited 38 long years for their first victory. Imagine how great that felt for the team, after such a long losing streak!

Now, in the case of the San Marino football team, you can’t really blame them for their lack of historical accomplishment. Their entire country has a smaller population than Mildura, and it must be hard finding sufficient talent.

But what is it like to experience a rough losing streak in cricket, and what can we do to bounce back from these streaks? Or conversely, maintain a winning streak?

Cricket For All – Adelaide’s top cricket training facility – explains the psychology of losing in this post, and how to improve mental strength and confidence:

How do losing streaks happen? Psychology of losing explained

Sometimes losing streaks happen because the team simply isn’t as good as the others, like when a second division football club gets promoted one season but then swiftly gets relegated the next, as it can’t keep up with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.

But other times, a team full of great players simply drops the ball, and doesn’t perform the way you’d expect. A great example of this is England’s 2023 World Cup campaign in India.

How good teams experience bad losing streaks

Most coaches agree that when great teams go through bad losing streaks, it’s not due to a drop in physical form – it’s due to mental blocks and behavioural factors within the team. Blaming other teammates, a lack of accountability from players, and other grievances between teammates are often cited as the main factors behind team collapses.

How to bounce back from losing streaks

Here’s our best advice for bouncing back from losing streaks as a cricket team:

  • Concentrate on strategy, not results
It’s tempting to focus on the outcome of the match, rather than how the match is being played, but this should actually be reversed. Focus on executing the match strategy, and the win will come.
  • Building team rapport
Team building is a good way to strengthen player ties, and put differences to the side. Going out for dinner together, playing a round of golf, or going bowling are all great ways to build rapport amongst the team.
  • Don’t generalise
‘We always lose to this team’… well, yeah, with that mindset you will! Don’t succumb to generalisations. Treat every match as a blank canvas. Look at the Morocco football team’s 2022 World Cup result, finishing in fourth place, ahead of traditional titans Spain, England, Brazil and Germany.
